Granit-Kleber AS is a company in the concern Granit-1893 AS, which has quarried different types of natural stones in Norway for more than 100 years. The steatite is quarried in the local councils Sel and Vaagaa in Gudbrandsdalen and the factory is in Otta. The soapstone is a metamorphic species of rock, which means that it is made of other species of rocks under high pressure and temperature. Steatite has unique qualities that make it particularly suitable for heating and our forefathers, these qualities include its heat-retaining capacity and the fact that it can withstand temperatures up to 1 550C. Steatite is fireproof, has a high resistance to chemical attack and is not affected by frost. The Norwegian steatite contains 64% talcum. It is very soft and is easy to shape, and because of that it is used as decoration on for example walls, and several castles, churches and cathedrals has steatite decorations. The well known cathedral Nidarosdomen in Trondheim is built of steatite.
